Artists are encouraged to submit artwork exploring themes influenced by G.K. Chesterton, one of the most influential writers, critics and thinkers of the early 20th century. Chesterton’s influence ranged from inspiring Ingmar Bergman’s “The Magician” to the comic book character Gilbert from the Marvel series “The Sandman.”

“Driving without Destination” is the title of an article published in The Chesterton Review (volume XXVI, no. 3, August 2000) written by Dr. Dermot Quinn, professor of history at Seton Hall University. It is also the theme of the exhibition. Participating artists will be asked to read Dr. Quinn’s article and create artwork in response to its theme. Manifest Announces Major New Project

1st International Painting Annual (INPA)

A Competitive Annual Publication of Works of Contemporary Painting and Writing about Painting

$1000 in cash prizes.

In celebration of Manifest’s fifth anniversary (January 2010) we are very proud to announce this next major step in Manifest Press’s evolution in fulfilling the Manifest non-profit mission to stand for quality in the visual arts… The International PAINTING Annual.

The INPA will be a complementary project to the ongoing Drawing Annual (INDA). The goal of the INPA will be to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, current, and relevant works of painting from around the world. As a carefully designed high-end book, the INPA will enable Manifest to assemble a diverse array of works of painting by international artists, without the limitation of physical availability, gallery space, or shipping logistics. With this Manifest leverages its considerable experience in publication design specifically for works of art, with a high level of sensitivity to the artist’s point of view.

In 2005 Manifest launched the International Drawing Annual project. In four completed volumes the INDA has presented three hundred and three works by 166 artists from around the world, and distributed the books far and wide to collectors, patrons, libraries, museum bookstores, art students, professors, and artists. Thousands view the online supplemental resources provided with each publication. The project has gained a great deal of credibility over the past five years, making the INDA a respected source for a consistent, balanced, and intriguing sampling of excellent contemporary drawing. The INPA will parallel the Drawing Annual series, exploring and taking stock of this nearest kin to drawing, and bringing more excellent art by more artists to even more people than ever before.

Manifest’s book and gallery projects have become highly competitive and prestigious events for artists to be involved with. And each new project brings different artists together, with new work, in new ways, and with always surprising results. Furthermore, Manifest’s books are designed and printed with the utmost care and attention to design integrity, making them exquisite documents of the art contained within.

Both soft and hardcover versions of the INPA will be printed and available by spring of 2011.

Submission process now open.

Postmark or online submission deadline for entry: JUNE 30, 2010 For more info. visit: http://www.manifestgallery.org/lists/lt.php?id=bUoBVQNVBFkFGlIEUxoEDw5S

Bus Closing Party + Where Are They Now? A Bus Projects Forum

Hi Y’all, Well, we’ve got two exciting things happening in the next week. Count them! Two.

Thing 1- is our Closing Party.

For those who came in late, after 9 years in our current location, our landlord, Wesley Mission, have decided they want to build an office block on top of us and have ended our lease. It’s been coming for a while and plans are well underway to re-invent ourselves as a mobile arts space, but as a way of saying goodbye to the shack on Little Lonsdale, and hello to a bright and exciting new future we’re holding a party to end all parties.

The party will be held at 117 Little Lonsdale Street from 4pm on Saturday 20th March. Tickets are $10 each and are strictly limited so be quick!

Thing 2 – is our next forum. “Where are they now?”: Musings from Bus artists

So you’ve had a show at Bus. It went well. Lots of people came and they seemed to like your art. What happens next? Is it a matter of sitting around and waiting for the exhibition offers to come flooding in? Will you need to fend off gallerists desperate to represent you? Or do you just return to your garret to starve some more? Hear three artists recount their experiences firsthand, starting with the exhibitions they have held at Bus and looking at the different directions they have taken since their shows. What did Bus actually offer them? Was it any different to what other ARIs or other art spaces offer?

Featuring Tai Snaith, Masato Takasaka, & Chris Bond
