Xstrata Percival Portrait Award 2012

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Artists from throughout Australia are now invited to submit entries to the 2012 Xstrata Percival Portrait Award, conducted by Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville.

The main prize of $40,000 (acquisitive), contributed by sponsor Xstrata through the Xstrata Community Partnership Program, represents a substantial increase on the $20,000 award in 2010 and is sure to engender widespread interest from artists across Australia.

The exhibition will also receive transport sponsorship from the specialist art freight company, International Art Services, with the arrangement providing reduced transportation costs to artists around the country who enter the exhibition.

The 2012 Xstrata Percival Portrait Award will be awarded to an Australian artist for a portrait with a link to Townsville completed during the 12 months preceding 1 May 2012.

The link can be the subject, the artist or the artist’s history, etc, and can be direct or tenuous. This is a way of capturing history and building a collection that directly references Townsville’s stories and geographical location.

Also confirmed is the judge of the 2012 Xstrata Percival Portrait Award – Barry Pearce. Mr Pearce was formerly the Head of Australian Art and is currently (inaugural) Emeritus Curator at the Art Gallery of NSW. Through his work at the Art Gallery of NSW he has had involvement with the nation’s most famous portrait award, The Archibald, and as such brings much knowledge and experience to the role of judge.

The winner will be announced on Friday 4 May 2012 and accepted entries will be exhibited at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, from 4 May to 1 July 2012.

The general public will also have an opportunity to judge their favourite entry with the Ergon Energy People’s Choice Award, to be awarded upon completion of the exhibition.

The closing date for entries is Friday 30 March 2012.

Artists can download entry forms and conditions of entry from: http://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/FACILITIES/GALLERIES/PERCTUCKER/Pages/percival.aspx
